The Coronavirus (COVID-19) is forcing many of us to change and adapt our routines to a new “normal.” One thing that has not changed since the COVID-19 pandemic is your chronic pain…
In fact, some may even argue that their pain has actually been getting worse since this pandemic started. Most people would believe that not having to commute to their job, sitting at their desks for a day, and fewer trips to the grocery store would result in less pain. Sadly, they are wrong.
In fact, a case can be made that pain has actually increased. Especially in those dealing with chronic pain. That can be linked to the increased stress, more time spent on the computer/electronics, and decreased activity levels.
Prior to seeing us, many of our patients have been misinformed. They were still guided by their friends, families, and even some other healthcare professionals who would suggest rest and ice for pain relief. They were told to do the routine of ice and lay down for hours on end until the pain goes away. This advice seems to be given more with the social distancing guidelines.
The problem with that model is that research has shown we should be moving! Especially if you are trying to keep pain from becoming a chronic one…
Please keep in mind that each situation is different. For example, if you were in a car accident today or developed radiating symptoms after a fall, this advice may not be for you. You should be evaluated by a medical professional first and follow their advice based on your injury.
But, if it is a chronic pain you are dealing with, the advice above is imperative!
Movement is Medicine!
But, you may not be ready for all types of movements. This is where a physical therapist comes in! A physical therapist will look at your movements and discuss your pain history. This is all-important to develop a plan to get back to all movements! That means getting back to getting up from the ground after playing with your kids or grandkids. Getting back to golfing a full 18 and not having to stop in the clubhouse after 9 to ice your pain away.
Some may be ready to start with some light deadlifting. Others may need to just start with simple aerobic walks for a total of 60 minutes a day. This is all very patient-specific. That is where a physical therapist can help you make smart decisions in your recovery.
In this difficult time, it is even more crucial for you to find a healthcare advocate. A partner to get you on the road to recovery.
The COVID-19 has made so many changes in our life, but decreasing our pain doesn’t seem to be one of them.
